-

even a hyphen requires a change of name, so you’ll still need to notify all the necessary organizations.

you can start the process anytime after the marriage has taken place. most organizations will ask for a copy of your marriage license.

what are my options for a post-wedding name change?
you can take your husband’s last name as your own, add it after your family name through hyphenation, or use either selectively -- for instance, your maiden name in your field of work and your husband’s name in official identity documentation.
-
does i'm a mrs help me change my name legally?
only if you've gone through the legal process of changing your name with government officials. name change through marriage is not a legal name change and can be reversed at any time. to legally change your name you will need to seek legal counsel. once your name has been changed legally, i'm a mrs. can help you notify all the organizations you belong to about the name change.
-
what organizations should i notify first?
i'm a mrs. recommends starting with all government organizations to get identity documents like driver’s licenses and passports in order. financial institutions should probably be next. please note: if airline tickets were purchased under your maiden name, wait until you return from your honeymoon to update your passport. having to change the name on your airplane tickets because of a discrepancy with your name as it appears on your passport will incur additional travel charges.
-
why can't i'm a mrs. send name change requests on my behalf?
governmental and commercial bodies view name changes as a gateway to fraud. given their outlook, most will insist on meeting or speaking to you in person to confirm your identity when requesting a name change.
-
are there rigid time frames for changing name after marriage?
in certain states in the usa, yes. please be aware that depending on which american state you live in, the department of motor vehicles may require notification within 10 days after marrying. please pay special attention to time restraints when getting started with i'm a mrs.
